BUSINESS THREATS OF THE 21ST CENTURY

MANY threats exist today that we wouldn't ordinarily consider to be threats, such as the sprinkler system overhead going off randomly in our leased office, damaging critical paperwork; or the ground level window being an attractive target for a robber with opportunity, or a nosy neighbor who visits your office at a time when sensitive business data is exposed.  Each of these scenarios has a potential cost to be paid.

For example, the damage from the sprinklers could have catastrophic impacts to your business if it were to destroy gold copies of clients data and office equipment, especially where  no immediate replacement is available, and where recent data back ups weren't recent enough.  Risks associated with ground level windows can be reduced with window locks, cameras, flood lights etc, and nosy neighbors can be redirected into other areas, hopefully before data is viewed.

Other threats exist that are more unseen than seen, yet the impacts are all to real.  For example, do you know what a data breach looks like, especially if someone hacked into your equipment, downloaded client data, but left your system intact?  How would you know?  Unless you are monitoring your equipment closely and actually notice some additional hidden processes taking up memory on your computer, or are running detection software, chances are high that you will be unaware when data is stolen....so...how do you protect your clients and your business?

The short answer is there is no one solution, no one smoking gun that can solve all problems automagically, but there are safeguards that you can implement, from different strategic angles that can make your computer a more unattractive target for a hacker, and this is the main goal you are seeking to achieve with INFOSEC; i.e., reduce risk and deter attackers.

Additionally, if you are a small business owner, you often have the advantage of agility, where you can make rapid infrastructure changes in real time, forcing a would-be attacker to reevaluate next moves with you, or choose an easier target instead.

Threats will never be completely eradicated, but they can be reduced, where assessed losses are manageable.
